eGFR Calculator

Free medical tool ✓

This calculator estimates your glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), a measure of kidney function, from your creatinine result, age and sex. It shows your kidney function stage using the KDIGO classification.

Based on: the CKD-EPI 2021 equation (without a race coefficient)

We don't ask about race: the 2021 equation in current use removed the race coefficient because it was not scientifically sound.

How does this calculator work?

The calculator uses the CKD-EPI 2021 equation recommended by the US National Kidney Foundation and the American Society of Nephrology, now standard in most laboratories:

eGFR = 142 × min(Scr/κ, 1)α × max(Scr/κ, 1)−1.200 × 0.9938Age × 1.012 [if female]
κ = 0.7 (F) / 0.9 (M); α = −0.241 (F) / −0.302 (M)

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal eGFR?

90 mL/min/1.73m² or more. It falls gradually with age.

Why doesn't the calculator ask about race?

The CKD-EPI 2021 equation removed the race coefficient because it had no sound biological basis and delayed diagnosis for some patients.

Does one low result mean kidney disease?

No. Chronic kidney disease is diagnosed when the reduction lasts more than 3 months, or when there are other signs such as protein in the urine.

How do I convert creatinine from µmol/L to mg/dL?

Divide by 88.4 — for example, 88 µmol/L ≈ 1.0 mg/dL. You can also pick the unit directly in the calculator.
