How does this calculator work?
This tool uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, found to be the most accurate resting-metabolism equation for adults in reviews by the American Dietetic Association:
- Men: BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age + 5
- Women: BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age − 161
The result is then multiplied by an activity factor (1.2 to 1.9) to give your total daily energy needs.

Frequently asked questions
How many calories do I need to lose weight?
Eating about 500 kcal a day below your needs usually leads to losing around half a kilogram a week. Going below 1,200 kcal for women or 1,500 for men is not advised without medical supervision.
Is this calculator suitable during pregnancy?
No. Pregnant and breastfeeding women need extra calories that vary by stage — ask your doctor or midwife.
How do I choose the right activity level?
If unsure, pick the lower level; most people overestimate their activity and get a number that is too high.
Do my needs change in Ramadan?
Your total calories don't change much, but their timing does. Focus on a balanced suhoor and a moderate iftar.
