How does this calculator work?
The Devine formula was developed in 1974 to calculate drug doses and became the most widely used ideal-weight estimate:
- Men: 50 kg + 2.3 kg × (height in inches − 60)
- Women: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg × (height in inches − 60)
Alongside it we show the weight range that corresponds to a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9, the standard used by the World Health Organization.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between ideal weight and BMI?
Ideal weight is a single estimate from a formula, while BMI gives a wider healthy range. Both are estimates, not strict targets.
Does ideal weight change with age?
The formula ignores age, but a slightly higher weight may be safer for older adults.
How do I know my body frame?
Wrap your thumb and middle finger around your wrist: if they overlap your frame is small, if they touch it's medium, and if they don't meet it's large.
Is this calculator suitable for children?
No, it is designed for adults only.
